Dwelling on Him

Dwelling on Him

Do you get disturbing things from others that lead you to feel attacked? I mean an unexpeded critical letter, phone call or personal encounter. A number of these kinds of messages have come my way. I don’t know how you react but my tendency is to dwell a lot on what I could have done to bring about such a negative response.

A New Creation?

A New Creation?

I remember wrestling with the truth that I am a new creation. What does it mean to be new? Adding to my uneasiness was the fact that, according to David Needham, this really means in the Greek that I am a new species. When we became Christians, God made us a new species. How can this be? I often don’t appear to be new! I may not necessarily experience freedom from old temptations, old desires, nasty thoughts, and wounded emotions.

What is Ministry Anyway?

What is Ministry Anyway?

Howard Butt Jr. the founder of Laity Lodge, has for decades led the charge for people to find ministry in the work place. I’m not sure where Mr. Butt’s passion began but I can only guess that he had the wisdom to see that there was something amiss with the notion in Christendom that "ministry" was conducted only by those with seminary degrees who stood behind pulpits.

Faith-Based Prayers

Faith-Based Prayers

I heard it again, just a few weeks ago. A serious, sincere leader of a Bible study said he was learning more and more that he was not accepted on the basis of what he did, but on the basis of who he is in Christ. As the Bible study drew to a close, I heard the usual prayers—the "help me’s" and the "strengthen me’s", the "be with me’s" and the "forgive me’s". Then followed a prayer by the leader to help him become more righteous, more peaceful, more patient and kind.

Does it seem like there is something holding you back in some instances and something pushing you forward in others? And does it seem like, in order for you to succeed, you have to first overcome you? In other words, do you find yourself battling against yourself?
