You Are Not In The Flesh

You Are Not In The Flesh

The beauty of the Gospel is that we are not left to fend for ourselves. Christ's death on the cross solved our sin problem and so much more.  Through His finished work we've been made the dwelling place of God so God is no longer external to us but lives in us. God put His Spirit in us and as we abide in Him, He's able to live His life through us. We are no longer a self-sufficient people! We are in the Spirit and are called to walk in the Spirit.

Free or Slave

Free or Slave

My mind is very dualistic so I tend to see everything as black or white, right or wrong, and either or. It is probably the result of eating too much from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil instead of the Tree of Life.  So be patient with me as I try to work everything out in my head. Lately, I’ve been trying to figure out whether in Christ I’m free or a slave.

Too Good to be True

Too Good to be True

Let’s face it. If we are pointing out enemies of grace, particularly those areas where the path is hard from years of tradition and wrong thinking, we don’t have to go any farther than our own minds. I define the flesh as the system we developed to handle life. Perhaps we could broaden that to simply the things we learned and accepted about life from the world, our family, and the devil. I have written extensively about the flesh, but it is worth pointing it out again here.

Lies, Lies, and More Lies

Lies, Lies, and More Lies

Both the book of Hebrews and the book of Titus inform us that we have a God who cannot lie. Hebrews 6:18 reads "...it is impossible for God to lie…" Titus 1:2 likewise reads "...God, who cannot lie…" I have often pondered on this monumental truth. After all, if God could lie, we would have no assurance of the certainty of His promises, no surety of judgment for either the righteous or the unrighteous, no confidence in the Word of God, and no sure history to protect us from the revisionists who tinker with the past. We would all be left to try to outwit a deceiving God who has vast advantages over us. Can you comprehend such a devastating turn of events?

Just Pick One

Just Pick One

Going to the grocery store with me used to be pure torture for my youngest daughter. It would take me FOREVER to make a decision about what to buy. I would stand in the isle trying to pick the item that would be most cost-efficient, healthiest, and easiest to prepare. My desire was to glorify and honor God in all I did including the use of my money.

You Shall Remember

You Shall Remember

In my reading and meditations I was going through Deuteronomy chapter 8 and noticed how many times Moses was calling Israel to "remember" the Lord God. How could they forget? He had done so many miraculous things for them; delivered them from slavery in Egypt, fed them bread from Heaven, given them water from the rock, quail in abundance to eat and made them rich out of their poverty.

An Obituary for Mr. Nice Guy

An Obituary for Mr. Nice Guy

Obituaries can exagerate the truth about someone’s life. It’s possible we feel the need to memoralize what we want to remember and ignore what we don’t. The following is an obituary written by a client not about his physical death but his spiritual death. It’s an unadulerated biography about life after the flesh and how understanding his death, burial, ressurection, and ascension with Christ changed everything.

There is a Special Kind of Fatigue

There is a Special Kind of Fatigue

I know about hard work. As a young man it was physical labor, as an army officer it was more mental and emotional, as a college dean the emotional stress was extreme at times. All these tasks produced fatigue. Most of us know a different kind of tired. It is the one that encompasses every part of our being. We are apt to call it complete exhaustion. We are completely spent, physically, emotionally and mentally.

When People Mean Evil

When People Mean Evil

n my devotions today I read the story of Joseph and his brothers. It’s probably safe to say there was a certain degree of dysfunction in this family that makes me feel better about my own…! Sure, we’ve got our problems, but really nothing on this level. That’s one of the things I really love about the Bible. It never hides the dysfunction or puts on pretense. The Bible exposes our weaknesses and failings and shows how God redeems all of these for His good purposes.

The Cross Through Songs

The Cross Through Songs

Martin Luther believed that "the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music." Scripture encourages us to "...sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts” and to make "...music to the Lord in your hearts” as a method of letting "...the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives."

My Way

My Way

Ashlie Michener sat in the back seat of the family Suburban sobbing. Her ponytail was cinched down tight at the crown of her head and the August sun refracted into tiny prisms as it glinted against her damp cheeks. Today was Kindergarten Roundup and Ashlie and her mother were on their way to meet her teacher.

Holy and Without Blame

Holy and Without Blame

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved." (Ephesians 1:3-6 NKJV)

Is the Truth a What or a Who for You?

Is the Truth a What or a Who for You?

When I was a kid there was a TV show about a police detective who, when interviewing people, would say, "Just the facts." When we look at truth just as facts we get stuck looking for life where it can’t be found. Jesus came as the personification of truth and told people if they would believe on Him they would experience abundant life. The Gospel is far more than accepting a certain set of facts it is accepting Him who is Truth. Jesus had this kind of conversation with Pilate on His mission to the cross
