How did we ever survive without cell phones? On occasion when I inadvertently leave home without mine, I go into a momentary panic mode upon realizing that it is missing. It’s amazing how much I’ve come to depend on and how much trust I’ve put into an inanimate object - A THING!
I trust my phone for 24/7 contact but where would I be without its GPS getting me where I need to go? What’s even more astounding is I trust this thing despite having been led astray by it before. I appreciate that it will reroute me when I make a wrong turn but sometimes it sends me in circles. Have you ever been on one of those round-about routes that you could have self-navigated in half the time had you just looked ahead?
I love the analogy a client once made between God and a GPS. We were talking about choices and her concern about making the wrong choice. For many of us fear of making a wrong choice can paralyze our Christian walk. I explained that God has made provision for every choice we make because He knows what choice we will make before we make it. Nothing comes as a surprise to Him. His Word says in Romans 8:28 that He causes ALL things to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose; that includes “wrong” choices. A light bulb went off, and my client said, “He is like our GPS or Siri on our phones saying ‘Rerouting.’ “That’s exactly it!”, I exclaimed. “No matter how many wrong turns we take, He will reroute us and get us to our final destination.”
In contemplating the connection between God and the Global Positioning System, a pastor made a further connection in referring to GPS as God’s Positioning System. I then began to realize the depth of that idea (or maybe I should say the “height” of that idea).
What is our position in God? In Ephesians 1, we read that Christ is seated in the heavenlies at the right hand of the Father, far above any worldly power or authority with everything placed in submission under His feet. If we have received Christ as Savior, we have been taken out of the domain of darkness and placed into the Kingdom of His Son (Colossians 1:13); we have been placed into Christ. Our position, therefore, is IN Christ – seated at the right hand of the Father in a place of unconditional love and acceptance, favor, rest, abundant blessings and provision, power, authority, and victory! (See Ephesians 2)
If we put our trust in God’s Positioning System, we can reign in this earthly life from a position on high, living above our circumstances. From this position we can rest and rejoice in our power, authority and victory over the darkness of this physical world.
Christ is our real, LIVING GPS in whom we can put our full faith and trust, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17)
WOW! In Him, we can never be lost; we can never be out of contact! In Him, we will get to our final destination! We can rest and rejoice in this living, divine and infallible GPS!
